How to Become an ASFA Judge
Becoming an ASFA judge is a multi-step process designed to ensure all judges possess deep knowledge of the rules, safety procedures, and sighthound running styles. Below is a simplified overview based on the ASFA Judges Licensing Process (JDG 06).
Apprentice Judging Eligibility
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Must be in good standing with the American Sighthound Field Association (ASFA).
- Must have a general knowledge of the coursing abilities of the breeds recognized by the ASFA.
- Must be familiar with the ASFA's Running Rules and Field Procedures for Lure Field Trials and ALL related policies.
- Must have participated in lure field trials for a minimum of three (3) consecutive years.
- Must have served in some official field capacity at a minimum of ten (10) field trials.
- Download from the ASFA web site all applicable forms.
- The ASFA Judges Handbook, available on the ASFA website, is a valuable resource for new judges.
Pre-Licensing (Apprentice Judging) Requirements
- Must judge a minimum of five breeds.
- Must judge each breed at a minimum of three trials under three different licensed judges, judging every course of the breed, including runoffs & BOB.
- Must request permission from the Field Chairman to apprentice judge at a Lure Field Trial.
- Must request permission from the licensed judge to apprentice with them.
- Must record scores on a judge's sheet, to be saved for submission when the requirements have been completed. Download a blank form from the ASFA web site or ask the FTS for forms.
- Must have each licensed judge fill out and sign a Judging Confirmation Statement (JDG 02).
- The ASFA Judges License application, confirmation statements, judge's sheets and the application fee must be submitted within one year of the last date apprenticed. Prefer electronic/scanned submissions.
- Must complete a test provided by the ASFA covering knowledge of the running rules and policies with a minimum score of 85% correct.
- The application must be published in the monthly judge report twice before the license can be granted.
Provisional Judging License Requirements (Breeds 1–3)
- Must judge the performance of five or more hounds in a stake or seven hounds of a breed at three trials for that breed under three or more different all-breed licensed judges.
- Presents each judge with a Judging Confirmation Statement (JDG 02), which the licensed judge completes and returns to the provisional judge.
- The provisional license covers all breeds but may not judge as a provisional for more than four breeds at a trial without prior approval from the Regional Director. A Provisional may judge Singles and any breeds for which they are regularly licensed in addition to the four provisional breeds without special permission.
- When the requirements have been met for one or more breeds, the provisional judge notifies the Licensing Chair on form JDG 03, listing each breed & assignment, accompanied by the confirmation forms for each judging assignment.
- The application must be published in the monthly judge report twice before the license can be granted.
- All forms for a single breed must be dated within a three-year period.
- A Provisional must be fully licensed for at least one breed within three years.
Provisional Judging License Requirements (Additional Breeds)
- Must judge the performance of a breed with at least 3 hounds at a minimum of three trials under three or more different licensed judges. (5 hounds per stake or 7 hounds per breed is not required once the first 3 breed licenses have been granted.)
- Presents each licensed judge with a Judging Confirmation Statement (JDG 02), which the licensed judge completes and returns to the provisional judge.
- All forms for a single breed must be dated within a three-year period.
- When the above requirements have been met, the provisional judge notifies the Licensing Chair in writing, listing each assignment, accompanied by the confirmation forms for each judging assignment.
- The application must be published twice.
- Once a judge is properly licensed for eight breeds, they may apply for an All Breed license.
All Breed License & Renewals
- Once a judge is properly licensed for eight breeds, they may apply for an All Breed license.
- The application must be published in the monthly judge report twice before the license can be granted.
Important Notes:
1. A judge must judge at least once in each two years, or the license will lapse.
2. Any judge who misses an assignment must send a letter of explanation to the chair of Judges' Licensing within two weeks of the date of the missed trials.
